Philadelphia: It’s a sad day for football fans. Bill Bergey, the former linebacker for the Eagles and Bengals, has passed away at 79 after battling cancer for three years. His son, Jake, shared the news on social media, and you could feel the love in his words.

Jake called his dad the best father and friend anyone could ask for. It’s clear Bergey was not just a great player but an amazing person too. He was drafted by the Bengals in 1969 and quickly made a name for himself, earning rookie honors and a spot in the Pro Bowl.

After five seasons in Cincinnati, he joined the Eagles, where he really shined. Bergey made four Pro Bowls and was recognized as an All-Pro multiple times. His best season was in 1974, where he had five interceptions and nearly snagged the defensive player of the year award.

He played in the Super Bowl with the Eagles in 1980, which was his last season in the NFL. By the time he hung up his cleats, he had racked up an impressive 27 interceptions and 18.5 sacks.

Even after retiring, Bergey stayed close to the game, working as an analyst on the Eagles Radio Network. He’ll be missed by many, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of fans and players alike.
