Streaky Bay: A tragic incident unfolded when 28-year-old Lance Appleby went missing after a shark attack. His memorial service was held recently, bringing together family and friends to celebrate his life.
Authorities confirmed that the search for Lance’s body officially ended after 12 long days. It was a tough time for everyone involved, and police expressed gratitude to all the volunteers who helped in the search.
During the memorial, held in a packed hall, a surfboard was displayed alongside a photo of Lance. Friends and family shared stories about his adventurous spirit and love for the outdoors. One family friend, Kayla, spoke about how inspiring his zest for life was.
Everyone remembered him as “forever young, forever surfing, forever loved.” It was a beautiful tribute to a life cut short too soon.
Lance was last seen on January 2, just before the attack. Witnesses reported that he was enjoying the waves when the shark struck. A jet skier later found his surfboard, which had a bite mark on it.
His brother Kenneth shared the family’s heartbreak online, saying they were in “impossible pain.” He emphasized that Lance was doing what he loved most, with a smile on his face.
As a local, Lance was well-known in the community. He studied at the Streaky Bay Area School and was working as an apprentice carpenter. His loss has deeply affected everyone around him.
Assistant Police Commissioner John De Candia mentioned that such tragedies impact many people, not just the family. He also noted that there had been reports of shark sightings in the area, suggesting that locals might have valuable insights about ocean safety.
Sadly, this incident follows another shark attack in the same region last year, highlighting the dangers that can lurk in the waters.
