London: A cherished community garden in Forest Hill has been saved! Local folks came together and raised over £8,000 to keep it going.

Located behind the Forest Hill Library, this garden was at risk of closing in October 2024 due to funding issues. But thanks to the hard work of volunteers, it transformed from a neglected spot into a peaceful retreat for everyone.

In just 72 hours, more than 100 people chipped in, smashing the original £1,000 goal. The garden is now a vibrant space filled with fruits, veggies, and beautiful plants.

The funds will help cover insurance for two years and provide for plants, tools, and pay Leigh, the project leader, for her weekly sessions. She had been volunteering without pay since June 2023.

One volunteer shared how the garden has helped people, especially those facing mental health challenges. It’s a great way to connect with others and enjoy nature.

The garden has two areas: one with flowers and shrubs, and another wilder section that attracts birds and butterflies. Weekly volunteer days have become a highlight for the community, bringing together a diverse crowd.

Thanks to the generous donations, including a notable £250 contribution, the garden will continue to thrive as a sanctuary for both the community and local wildlife.
