Foreign Rapist Jailed for Six Years Wins Payout for Unlawful Detention

A convicted rapist has received compensation for being unlawfully detained in the UK

Ebou Jasseh, Watford, Gambia, UK, Home Office

Watford: So, there’s this guy, Ebou Jasseh, who was jailed for six years for raping a woman. He got into some serious trouble back in 2015 when he attacked a drunk woman outside a nightclub. He lured her to his flat by saying he was throwing a party. Not cool, right?

Jasseh, who’s originally from Gambia, came to the UK on a six-month visa back in 2004. After serving his time, he was supposed to be sent back to Gambia in 2019. But things didn’t go as planned. He messed up his parole and ended up back in jail.

Then, he was held at an immigration removal center near Heathrow while the Home Office tried to figure out how to send him back home. But Jasseh wasn’t ready to leave just yet. He started throwing legal challenges at the Home Office, claiming he’d face harm if he went back to Gambia.

Despite his asylum application being denied, he stuck around in the UK, even saying he’d go back voluntarily. Fast forward to now, and a High Court judge decided he shouldn’t have been held in that center because it was unlikely he’d actually be sent back to Gambia.

As a result, Jasseh has been awarded some “substantial” damages, though the exact amount is still under wraps. This has sparked outrage, with some folks saying it’s a total disgrace that he got any compensation at all. The Home Office, on the other hand, insists they’re doing their best to remove foreign criminals quickly. It’s a messy situation for sure!
