Warrington: The council is gearing up to roll out food waste collections starting April 1, 2026. They just approved the purchase of food waste caddies to get things moving.
These collections will happen every week, which means residents will have three bins to manage, or four if they opt for green bin collections.
Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, who’s in charge of health and social care, mentioned that other places have been doing this for a while. She pointed out that food waste in landfills is bad for the environment because it creates methane.
She understands that changing habits can be tough, but it’s for a good cause. The goal is to help the environment and cut down on emissions.
She’s hopeful that a solid communication plan will help residents understand the benefits and support them as they start using their new food caddies. It’s a big change, and she remembers when blue bins were introduced; not everyone was thrilled about sorting recycling.
The Environment Act 2021 is pushing local councils to provide weekly food waste collections. The report highlighted that every residential property must have this service.
Residents will get 5L kitchen caddies and larger 23/25L caddies for weekly collection. The Act also considers the challenges of providing this service in flats and communal areas.
Warrington Borough Council received a hefty grant of £1,863,566 from DEFRA to help kickstart this food waste collection service.
They plan to roll out the caddies in phases to manage resources effectively. With around 98,000 residential properties in Warrington, they’re starting with an order of 60,000 caddies, followed by another 15,000 in the next few months.
