Cardiff: So, it looks like flu is really hitting hard in Wales right now. Hospitals are seeing a big jump in admissions, with over 600 people currently in wards. It’s getting serious, with 38 of those in critical care.
A report from Public Health Wales says we’re approaching peak flu season. They noted that flu activity is at medium levels but definitely on the rise. Just last week, 281 new patients were admitted, which is a noticeable increase from the week before.
They also mentioned that RSV, which causes a lot of coughs and colds, is still around, with 60 new hospital admissions. Covid-19 cases are hanging in there too, but they seem to be stable for now.
Interestingly, the report highlighted that the RSV season has peaked and is starting to decline. It’s good to hear that Covid-19 levels are lower than before, but flu is still a big concern.
In terms of doctor visits, the rate for flu consultations has gone up a bit, which shows more folks are feeling unwell. They tested a bunch of samples and found quite a few positive for different types of viruses, with Influenza A being the most common.
Public Health Wales is keeping a close eye on things. They’re seeing more cases of Influenza A (H1N1) and some of H3N2, while Influenza B is less common right now.
Just the other day, the Welsh Ambulance Service had a tough time over Christmas due to the surge in flu and respiratory cases. They even declared a critical incident because of the backlog of emergency calls. Health Secretary Jeremy Miles mentioned that they had planned for this, but the flu levels were higher than expected.
