Edinburgh: Just before Christmas, folks in the West End were thrilled about the new layout at Melville Crescent. It was a fresh start, and everyone was excited. But come New Year, things took a turn. Flooding showed up on the newly formed street, and some basement owners were really worried about their properties getting soaked.

After the council’s gully team cleared the water, it seemed like a fix. But then, on January 5, the flooding returned. People were understandably upset. They took to social media, calling for emergency drain clearing, especially since the work cost £2.1 million.

Councillor Stephen Jenkinson, who oversees transport and environment, acknowledged the drainage issues. He mentioned they’re working with the contractor to figure out what’s causing the problem. They’ve got plans to fix the damaged paving next month, which is a relief.

Balfour Beatty, the contractors behind the project, confirmed they’re aware of the drainage issues. They did a CCTV inspection and found a partial blockage in the drainage line. While there’s no flooding at the moment, they’ve hired a drainage specialist to sort it out quickly.

The major works included widening pavements, reintroducing setts on the road, and adding new pedestrian crossings. They also created new lawn areas and planted street trees, which should make the area look nice once everything is sorted.

So, fingers crossed they get this all fixed up soon!
