Greater Manchester: Flood warnings are on the horizon as heavy rain sweeps across the area. The Environment Agency has already issued four flood alerts, and they’re saying more warnings could come tonight.
One alert is for the River Mersey and its tributaries, warning that water levels might rise overnight, leading to possible flooding. This comes after a yellow weather warning from the Met Office for the entire Greater Manchester area.
In a tweet, the Environment Agency mentioned that more flood warnings are likely this evening, especially as people celebrate New Year’s Eve. They’re urging everyone to stay safe and avoid walking or driving through any floodwaters.
Flooding risks are particularly high in low-lying areas and roads near Micker, Cringle, Sinderland, and Poynton brooks. The agency is keeping a close eye on rainfall and river levels, so they’re monitoring the situation closely.
They’ve also highlighted that areas around the Rivers Irk and Medlock, as well as Wince and Worsley Brooks, are at risk. If you’re in those spots, it’s best to steer clear of low-lying paths and bridges near water.
Another alert covers the River Mersey in Tameside, warning about potential flooding in areas around the Rivers Goyt, Tame, Sett, and Etherow. Locations like Saddleworth, Mossley, and New Mills could also be affected.
Lastly, there’s an alert for the River Bollin catchment area, which includes places like Altrincham and Wilmslow. Residents are encouraged to check the flood risk in their area through the government’s website.
