Stoke Newington: A new Gail’s bakery is opening soon. Planning documents show how it will look. Some locals are excited, while others are worried.

Gail’s has faced backlash for expanding into trendy neighborhoods. This includes areas like Walthamstow and Primrose Hill. Many see it as a threat to local businesses.

The bakery will have cream-colored walls and brown half-panelled windows. Some residents think it could hurt local coffee shops already in the area.

Innie Fryer shared her mixed feelings. She prefers local spots but thinks Gail’s isn’t the worst chain. Others, like Leyla from Camia Deli, are upset about the competition.

She mentioned that Church Street used to be full of independent shops. Now, chains are moving in, and it’s hard to accept the change.

In Walthamstow, a cafe owner plans to sell her business due to lower foot traffic since Gail’s opened nearby. She’s had her quietest winter in 19 years.

Gail’s founder, Tom Molnar, announced plans to open 30 to 40 more bakeries in the UK by 2025. He noted that many empty shops offer attractive deals for new businesses.

The new Gail’s will replace the Indian restaurant Rasa Street, which closed earlier this year. Rasa, its sister restaurant, remains open nearby.

Gail’s has also opened locations in Southwark and Primrose Hill recently. The expansion continues as they aim to grow across the country.
