Stoke Newington: A new Gail’s Bakery is opening soon, and it’s causing quite a stir. Some folks are excited, while others are not so thrilled about it.
Residents are split on whether this chain is a good idea. Some think it’ll be a nice addition, but others fear it might hurt local coffee shops.
The bakery plans to change the current green walls to cream and add brown half-panelled windows. It’s a big change for the street.
Innie Fryer, a local, shared her mixed feelings. She said, “I’m against chains, but this one isn’t the worst.” She loves her local bakery and hopes to stick with it.
Across the street, the owners of Camia Deli are worried. Leyla, one of the owners, said it’s sad to see a chain move in. They’ve been there for almost 16 years and miss the independent vibe.
They know change is happening, but it’s tough to accept. Their brother Bulent added that they have loyal customers, which helps.
In Walthamstow, a cafe owner is feeling the pinch too. She’s thinking of selling her business because foot traffic has dropped since Gail’s opened nearby.
Gail’s founder, Tom Molnar, mentioned plans to open 30 to 40 more bakeries in the UK by 2025. He’s taking advantage of empty shops and good deals from landlords.
Before Gail’s, an Indian restaurant called Rasa Street was in that spot but closed earlier this year. Rasa, its sister restaurant, is still open nearby.
Gail’s has already opened in Southwark and Primrose Hill, and they’re not stopping anytime soon.
