Sydney: The Australian Federal Police have made their first arrests in a new effort to tackle anti-Semitic crimes that have surged since the Hamas attack on October 7.

A man from western Sydney was taken into custody after allegedly posting death threats on a Jewish association’s social media page. Police raided his home in Blacktown, seizing various electronic devices and documents.

He’s facing serious charges for using a communication service to make threats and harass others. This guy is the first to be charged under Special Operation Avalite, which was set up to target repeat offenders causing harm in the community.

The 44-year-old has been granted bail and is set to appear in court on February 26. If found guilty, he could face up to 15 years in prison for his actions.

In addition to this case, another man has been charged in connection with a vandalism spree that damaged multiple vehicles and buildings in Sydney’s eastern suburbs last year. This incident involved anti-Israel graffiti and significant property damage.

Police are actively investigating more individuals linked to these hate crimes, and they’re sending a clear message: if you engage in anti-Semitic behavior, you will be held accountable.

NSW Premier Chris Minns has condemned the rise in anti-Semitic incidents, emphasizing that everyone in Australia should be able to practice their religion without fear. The community is rallying together to support those affected and to push back against hate.
