Victoria: Firefighters are in a tough spot right now. They’re battling a huge bushfire in the Grampians National Park, and it’s not looking easy. The fire has already burned through 29,000 hectares, and with over 300 firefighters on the ground, they’re doing everything they can to get it under control.
Authorities are saying it might take weeks to fully contain this blaze, which was sparked by a lightning strike. There’s an emergency evacuation warning for several communities, so folks are on high alert.
Incident controller Aaron Kennedy mentioned that the terrain is really steep and dry, making it super challenging to fight the fire directly. Plus, they’re expecting temperatures to hit 39°C soon, which could make things even worse.
Mr. Kennedy stressed that the fire risk is going to spike, and they’re trying hard to contain it before the Boxing Day weather hits. With two years of dry conditions in the area, fires spread quickly, and that’s a big concern.
Residents in towns like Bellfield, Halls Gap, and Fyans Creek have been told to leave immediately. The threat to nearby communities has eased a bit, but the warnings are still in place.
Relief centers are open in Ararat and Stawell, and the Grampians National Park is closed to visitors for now. It’s a tough situation, and firefighters in other states are also dealing with their own bushfires as summer kicks off.
Temperatures are expected to soar in Western Australia too, with elevated fire dangers across the region. It’s definitely a challenging time for everyone involved.
