Shildon: The PM Racing Team motorbike shop on Church Street is in ruins after a fire broke out just after 10 am yesterday. It was a tough scene to see.
Five fire engines rushed in to battle the flames that shot up high, with smoke filling the sky. It was quite a sight, and the area was quickly blocked off by the fire service and police.
While the exact cause of the fire wasn’t known at first, the fire service confirmed today that it was accidental. Thankfully, no one got hurt.
A spokesperson from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said they got the call at 10:12 am and sent five fire engines from nearby towns to help out.
They even brought in an aerial ladder platform to tackle the flames, and the last engine left the scene around 4:02 pm. It was a long day for everyone involved.
After the fire, the community really came together to support the shop owner, Patrick, who’s known as a “lovely man” around town. People have already raised over £1,000 to help him out.
Lillie Young, who started the fundraiser, mentioned that the community is “gutted” about the shop being destroyed. Eyewitnesses shared their shock and sadness as well.
Kelly Nelson, who works at a nearby sunbed shop, saw the whole thing unfold. She said it was heartbreaking to see Patrick standing outside his shop, devastated.
He told her, “I’ve been here 22 years and it’s just gone like that.” It’s a tough situation, but the support from the community is heartwarming.
