Spokane, Washington, Jimmy Carter, National Day of Mourning, Federal Closure

Spokane: So, here’s the scoop. Most Spokane County offices are shutting down this Thursday. It’s all in honor of former President Jimmy Carter, who recently passed away.

Mary Kuney, the Spokane County Commission Chair, mentioned that this closure is part of the agreements with county employees. They get all federal holidays, even the special ones.

And it’s not just the union folks. Non-represented employees will also get a paid day off. Pretty nice, right?

Earlier this week, President Biden signed an executive order making January 9 a day of remembrance for Carter. He died at 100 years old at his home in Georgia.

This Thursday is the first National Day of Mourning since George H.W. Bush passed away in 2018. It’s also when Carter’s state funeral will take place in D.C.

Now, about the postal service: they’ll be taking a break too. Regular mail delivery and services will be paused, but some packages will still get delivered.

Interestingly, Spokane and Spokane Valley will stay open on Thursday. But most banks and public schools will keep their doors open since this isn’t an official federal holiday.

Don’t worry, though. The county’s closures won’t mess with the solid waste system or court dates. Everything will be back to normal on Friday.
