London: Britain’s counter-terror police are on high alert after the tragic attack in New Orleans. They’re worried about a similar incident happening here, especially at iconic sites that could be seen as vulnerable.
Authorities, including MI5, are ramping up security measures. They’re particularly concerned that the New Orleans attack could inspire a copycat event in the UK. So, they’re increasing protection at historic locations.
Chris Phillips, a former head of the National Counter Terrorism Security Office, mentioned that an attack is “likely.” He pointed out that there are hundreds of iconic sites in the UK that could be targets.
He also noted that the New Orleans incident resembles a recent attack at a Christmas market in Germany, where many were injured and lives were lost. This has raised fears that Islamic State supporters might take inspiration from these events.
Currently, there are over 600 investigations into potential terror threats in the UK, with around 3,000 extremists being monitored by the government. Armed police are now stationed at various sites deemed potential targets.
Phillips emphasized the challenge of balancing security and personal freedoms. While counter-terrorism measures are being put in place, not every location can be covered, especially since many places in the UK are historic.
He also mentioned that intelligence is crucial in preventing these attacks. The US and UK are reportedly collaborating closely on terrorism issues to stay ahead of potential threats.
Scotland Yard has revealed that they’ve stopped three late-stage terror plots in the past year, including two Islamist plots and one far-right attack. Since 2017, there have been 43 late-stage plots, with some being described as “goal line saves.”
Overall, the threat level in the UK remains significant, and authorities are taking every precaution to keep the public safe.
