Huddersfield: An 18-year-old British volunteer, James Wilton, died in Ukraine. His father, Graham, attended his funeral and called it the hardest thing he ever did.

James had just finished college when he decided to help fight against Russia. He wanted to make a difference, despite his family’s concerns.

In July, while carrying a heavy pack, James was killed by a drone. His friend Jason tried to save him but couldn’t reach him in time.

Graham described James as a polite and likable young man. He said James was determined to go to Ukraine, even though his mother and sisters were against it.

James spent three months in Ukraine, receiving combat training. Graham said those were some of the best days of his life.

Graham thanked Jason for his bravery in trying to help James. He said, “You can never fully prepare for what happens on the battlefield.”

Jason recalled the moment they were crossing open ground when James saw a Russian drone. They tried to run, but James was hit.

After the incident, Jason was injured by a mine. Graham shared that his trip to Kyiv for James’ funeral was emotional and he made lifelong friends among James’ fellow soldiers.
