Hong Kong: The wife and son of Chung Kim Wah, a well-known activist, were taken by police for questioning. This happened on Tuesday as part of a national security investigation.

Chung, who used to work with the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute, fled to the UK in 2022. He’s been in the spotlight since he was named among six activists wanted for breaking the strict national security law.

After the law was enforced, Chung was accused of pushing for Hong Kong’s independence and seeking foreign sanctions against China. The police even put a hefty bounty on him.

His wife was seen leaving a police station after being questioned. This came right after another pollster, Robert Chung, was also questioned about whether he helped the fugitive.

Robert was taken from his home for investigation, suspected of using his company to aid someone wanted overseas. The police insisted this had nothing to do with their polling work.

Chung, now in the UK, mentioned he hasn’t spoken to his brother since he left, except for a brief online poll. He expressed sadness for the younger generation in Hong Kong, who are facing harsh realities for standing up for their beliefs.

Since July 2023, the police have issued multiple arrest warrants for activists in exile, and they’re also looking into Chung’s finances. So far, 19 people have been named in this crackdown.

Hong Kong’s chief executive stated that they would do everything possible to protect national security. Meanwhile, the UK’s foreign minister has condemned the targeting of individuals who advocate for freedom and democracy.

The Independent has reached out for comments from Chung and the British Foreign Office.
