Cheltenham, UK, James Henry Mayo, Jonathan Moore, Manslaughter

Cheltenham: The family of James Henry Mayo, who was tragically killed by his neighbor, has spoken out. The incident happened in his flat at Welland Court, Prestbury, when 64-year-old Jonathan Moore attacked the 80-year-old on April 14 last year.

According to Gloucestershire Police, Moore used both blunt and sharp objects during the attack. A post-mortem revealed that Mr. Mayo died from multiple injuries to his head and body.

The family expressed their gratitude to a neighbor who called for help right after the attack. They also thanked the police liaison officer for her support during such a tough time.

Moore was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order on January 10. The court learned that he had been experiencing delusions and paranoia leading up to the attack.

After the sentencing, Mr. Mayo’s family released a heartfelt statement. They thanked everyone involved in the aftermath of the brutal attack, from emergency services to legal teams, acknowledging that these professionals often don’t get the recognition they deserve.

They also highlighted the compassion shown by the police liaison officer during their darkest moments. The family hopes that justice has been served and that Jim can now rest in peace.

Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Usher described the attack as horrific and devastating for the family. He noted that the sentence allows Moore to receive the necessary support in a secure environment.

Moore, who had no prior convictions, was arrested and later pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility. The court heard that he had been acting increasingly paranoid in the weeks before the incident.

He believed he was being stalked and that Mr. Mayo was part of a conspiracy against him. The judge characterized the attack as brutal and frenzied, occurring in the hallway of the flat.

Moore inflicted serious injuries using two screwdrivers and a car steering wheel lock. The post-mortem confirmed the tragic nature of Mr. Mayo’s death.
