Family Members Weep in Stockton Courtroom as Son Faces Charges in Mom’s Slaying
A 20-year-old man faces charges for allegedly killing his mother, sparking emotional scenes in a Stockton courtroom during his arraignment
Stockton, California, Latoya Scrivens, Jkwon Williams, Manslaughter
Stockton: It was a tough day in court for everyone involved. A 20-year-old guy, Jkwon Williams, stood before a judge, accused of killing his mom on New Year’s Day. The courtroom was packed with family members, all visibly upset.
Before the hearing, some family members took to social media, claiming the shooting was an accident. They really believe it wasn’t intentional, despite the serious charges against him.
Williams is facing voluntary manslaughter charges. Prosecutors say he shot his mom, Latoya Scrivens, during a heated moment. It’s heartbreaking to think about how quickly things can go wrong.
During the hearing, you could hear the cries from over 20 family members who came to support him. Williams, dressed in a red jumpsuit, looked overwhelmed and broke down in tears as he faced the judge.
When asked if he could afford a lawyer, he seemed unsure and just shrugged. Eventually, a public defender was assigned to him. The whole scene was just so emotional, with tears flowing from both him and his family.
Earlier that week, police responded to a shooting at around 11 a.m. on Wednesday. They found Latoya, 47, with a gunshot wound. Sadly, she later died at the hospital.
Detectives quickly identified Williams as the suspect. He was taken in for questioning just hours after the incident. The police said he shot a gun inside a car, which led to his mom’s tragic death.
As the investigation continues, the district attorney’s office mentioned that they’re still gathering information. Williams didn’t enter a plea during the hearing and wasn’t granted bail. He’s set to return to court on February 3 for further proceedings.
Family members, while they didn’t speak to reporters, expressed their feelings online, insisting that the bond between mother and son was strong. They’re adamant that this was a tragic accident, not a crime.
A vigil was held to honor Latoya’s life, with candles and balloons set up outside their home. It’s a tough time for everyone, and the community is rallying around them.
