Nottingham: Families of the victims of Valdo Calocane are speaking out. They want NHS England to publish a full report on his care. Calocane killed three people in June 2023, including two students and a caretaker.
He was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order after the attacks. Prosecutors accepted his not guilty pleas to murder due to his paranoid schizophrenia. He was found guilty of manslaughter and attempted murder instead.
A summary of the mental health report will be available soon. However, the full report will remain confidential due to data protection laws. Only Nottinghamshire Healthcare Foundation Trust will see the complete report.
Radd Seiger, speaking for the families, urged NHS England to release the full findings. He believes it’s important for public safety. So far, NHS England has refused their request.
An NHS spokesperson stated that these reports follow confidentiality and data protection rules. Families feel let down by the system after Calocane’s sentencing.
A previous report by the Care Quality Commission criticized the mental health unit. It found serious failures in assessing Calocane’s risks. The families claim that the services involved have “blood on their hands.”
The Department of Health announced a public inquiry into Calocane’s care. Health Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized the need for improvements in the system to prevent future tragedies.
