Polmont: In 2018, two young inmates, Katie Allan and William Lindsay, tragically took their own lives while at Polmont Young Offenders Institution. Katie was just 21, and William was only 16. Their deaths have sparked outrage and calls for accountability.

Katie, a Glasgow University student, was serving time for a serious driving offense when she was found dead in her cell. William, who had a troubled past, died shortly after being admitted to Polmont. His situation was dire, having walked into a police station with a knife.

A fatal accident inquiry revealed serious failures by prison and healthcare staff. Sheriff SG Collins pointed out that both deaths could have been prevented with better care and attention. His report was extensive, highlighting systemic issues within the facility.

Justice Secretary Angela Constance is set to address the Scottish Parliament about the inquiry’s findings. Katie’s mother, Linda, expressed her heartbreak, stating that her daughter was “brutalised” in prison and lost all hope.

Linda emphasized that the prison system failed Katie, leading to her tragic decision. She criticized the lack of accountability for the prison service, arguing that without change, more lives could be lost.

William’s brother, John, shared his grief, saying their mother never stopped fighting for justice until her own death. He believes the system is broken and that those responsible should face consequences.

Lawyer Aamer Anwar, representing both families, plans to push for changes in the law to hold the Scottish Prison Service accountable. He condemned the lack of action and called for an end to the immunity that protects them from prosecution.

The Scottish Prison Service has expressed condolences and acknowledged the failures identified in the report. They claim to be committed to improving safety and support for vulnerable individuals in their care.
