Ottawa: Winter is just getting started, and already, we’re seeing some wild weather across the country. Multiple storms have rolled in, bringing cold and messy conditions.

This week, a new low-pressure system is forming in the Eastern U.S. and will push into Eastern Canada. It’s expected to bring a lot of precipitation starting midweek.

Usually, when we hear about weather bombs, we think of them forming off the Pacific coast or in Atlantic Canada. But this time, it’s different. This system will stay over land and undergo explosive cyclogenesis as it moves from the mid-Atlantic U.S. into Quebec.

So, what does that mean for us? Expect a mix of heavy rain, slippery snow, freezing rain, and even strong winds that could lead to power outages.

Keep an eye on local alerts to stay updated. The low will start developing over Virginia early Wednesday, pulling in moisture and warmer air from the Gulf of Mexico.

Rain will kick off in southern and eastern Ontario and southern Quebec on Tuesday night, with the heaviest downpours hitting eastern Ontario and Quebec.

But don’t get too comfortable; the rain won’t last long in southern Ontario. The warm air will quickly move north into Labrador, bringing widespread rain.

As the low-pressure system intensifies, it will draw in cold Arctic air from the Prairies. This means that rain will turn into heavy snow late Wednesday into Thursday.

With rain and snow combined, roads are going to be slippery, so be careful if you’re out and about.

Winds will also pick up overnight Wednesday, with gusts reaching up to 100 km/h as the system moves into Atlantic Canada.

Speaking of Atlantic Canada, while they might dodge the snow, they’ll still get hit with rain starting Thursday and lasting through Friday.

Those strong winds will be felt across eastern Quebec and Atlantic Canada, raising the risk of localized power outages.

There’s also a chance of freezing rain along the rain-snow boundary, especially in northern Quebec and Labrador, where snow is expected.

By the end of the week, Arctic air will sweep in, bringing a quick end to the mild temperatures we’ve been enjoying.
