Melbourne: So, there’s this washing machine expert who’s been chatting about how fabric softener can really mess things up. Apparently, it can cause mould to build up in your machine, especially in the detergent compartment. Yikes!
He recently visited a client and noticed mould only on the side where the fabric softener goes. When he asked her about it, she admitted she used it sometimes. He’s been sharing this info on TikTok, saying that no matter what kind you buy, softeners are just not good for your machine.
Instead of using fabric softener, he suggests grabbing some white vinegar, which you can find for about 35p at places like Aldi and Tesco. He recommends cleaning out the drawer first to get rid of any leftover softener.
Then, just fill that compartment with white vinegar and maybe add a couple of drops of your favorite essential oil for a nice scent. He claims this trick will keep your clothes soft and smelling great without all those harsh chemicals.
He’s pretty adamant about avoiding fabric softener, saying it can cause mould and even irritate your skin. Some folks worry that vinegar might damage the machine, but he reassures that it’s safe when used properly. It won’t sit in the machine long enough to cause any harm.
However, he does warn that if vinegar touches the machine’s body, it could corrode over time. Washing brand Vileda backs him up, saying white vinegar is safe for laundry and a great cleaning agent, as long as you dilute it.
But, cleaning expert Carol Harding has a word of caution too. She mentions that white vinegar can damage rubber seals, so it’s best to be careful with it.
