Verratti: A British expat has admitted to killing his partner in Italy. Michael Whitbread, 75, said he lost his cool due to her extreme jealousy.
He stabbed Michele Faiers, 66, in their home in October 2023. Whitbread claimed she wrongly thought he was cheating with another woman.
According to him, her jealousy led to both verbal and physical abuse. He expressed regret in court, saying, “I wish I hadn’t done it and I apologise.”
Whitbread said he even asked her to kill him with a knife, but things escalated into a fatal argument instead.
They had been living together in the village for three years. Faiers was found dead on their shared bed, with multiple stab wounds.
After the incident, Whitbread fled to his daughter’s home in the UK, but was later arrested and extradited back to Italy.
Faiers, a divorced mother of three, had been struggling with her suspicions about Whitbread. His lawyer mentioned that she subjected him to daily abuse.
In court, Whitbread shared a troubling incident where Faiers made him hold a note accusing him of cheating, even taking a photo of him with it.
A psychiatrist testified that Whitbread had been dealing with severe mood swings and depression, worsened by alcohol use. He had even attempted suicide earlier in the year.
After the tragedy, he reached out to Faiers’ daughters to express his sorrow. The trial is set to continue in February.
