Lahore: So, Imran Khan, the former cricketer and ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison. His wife, Bushra Bibi, got seven years. They were found guilty of corruption, which is a pretty big deal.
Khan played for Worcestershire County Cricket Club back in the day and even captained the Pakistan national team. He was a big name in cricket during the 80s and 90s.
The charges say they accepted land from a real estate tycoon in exchange for laundering money while Khan was in power. It’s a messy situation.
Prosecutors claim that the businessman, Malik Riaz, was allowed to pay fines using laundered money that was supposed to go back to Pakistan. It’s all very complicated and shady.
Khan has been saying since his arrest that he’s innocent and that this is all a setup by his rivals to keep him from coming back to power. He’s been in jail since August 2023.
It’s worth noting that he was ousted from his position in a no-confidence vote back in April 2022. He’s had a rough time lately, facing multiple convictions and sentences.
