Murcia: So, get this! Allan McCarthy, a former drug trafficker from Glasgow, is heading back to the Spanish prison where he did time. But this time, he’s not going back as an inmate. He’s going to perform a gig for the current inmates!
At 61, Allan has turned his life around and is now a musician. He was locked up in Sangonera de la Verde prison for drug trafficking when he was just 23. Back then, he was just a young guy trying to make a living in Spain.
He got caught up in a cannabis bust in 1998, and that landed him in prison. While he was there, he found his passion for music and even formed a band called Berlin 90. They had some success, recording a single called “Runaway” that got them some attention.
Now, he’s re-releasing that song with a fresh music video shot in his hometown. And guess what? The prison guards he used to know invited him back to perform! How cool is that?
Allan reminisced about his time in prison, saying it was a wild ride. He even got to perform at concerts while he was locked up, which was pretty rare. But then he got transferred to a tougher prison in Madrid, and that changed everything.
After serving his time, he returned to Scotland and stayed out of trouble, thanks to his family. He worked in magazine publishing and eventually made his way back to Spain after a 10-year ban. Now, he’s ready to reconnect with his past and share his music with the inmates.
It’s a fascinating story of redemption, and I can’t wait to see how his performance goes!
