Carlisle: John Lee Nixon was totally surprised when he got the MBE letter in November. He had no clue it was coming and was amazed when he opened it.
He spent a lot of time with the Football Association and the EFL, but he believes the award is really about his work with the EFL Trust. He feels it’s a real privilege to help grow this charity that focuses on community support.
John described the trust’s reach as having “tentacles all over England and Wales.” It’s all about making a difference through football, especially for young people and those who need it most.
He recalled how tough it was to get funding for community programs at first. Back then, the trust’s turnover was just £5 million. By the time he left, it had jumped to £20 million. He felt proud to help it grow.
John also made sure to thank his family for their support. He said, “This award isn’t just for me. It’s a thank you to my family, especially my wife, Margaret, who was always there for me.”
He spent 21 years with Carlisle United and now serves as an England Ambassador, traveling with the national team to matches, including a memorable game against Germany.
Gareth Southgate, the England manager, is set to be knighted for his contributions to football after leading the team to several finals and semi-finals.
John praised Southgate for bringing a club-like spirit back to the England team, saying it felt like being with Carlisle United again.
