Professor Albert van Dijk, the lead author of a recent study, pointed out that climate change is making flash floods, droughts, and intense storms more common. He noted that many people only realize the severity of the issue when it directly affects them.
Australia has faced its share of climate extremes, which has made the country somewhat resilient. However, the professor cautioned that these extremes are becoming even more severe.
He emphasized the need for improved flood defenses, drought-resistant food production, and better early warning systems to prepare for these challenges.

Researchers gathered data from thousands of ground stations and satellites to analyze rainfall, soil moisture, and river flows, revealing alarming trends in temperature and water levels.
In 2024, air temperatures over land were 1.2°C warmer than at the start of the century, and record-high temperatures were reported in many countries.
Australia’s West Coast and Lake Eyre basins recorded unprecedented annual discharge values, while several countries faced record-low soil moisture levels.
Overall, the situation is dire, with the number of frost days at a record low and annual minimum temperatures rising, particularly in tropical regions.
