Aberdeen: So, there’s this really disturbing story about a guy named Ryan Yates. He was a paedophile who tried to abduct kids in a park. He even stabbed a grandmother who was trying to protect her granddaughters. It’s just awful.
Yates died in prison at HMP Glenochil on December 21, 2024. He was 44. He had been serving a life sentence since 2010 for that brutal attack. The whole thing went down at Westfield Park, where he targeted a 60-year-old woman. She was just trying to keep her grandkids safe.
During the trial, it came out that Yates had plans to abduct and harm the kids, who were only eight and two. He even admitted he wanted to kill the grandmother to get to them. It’s chilling to think about.
When he attacked, the grandmother fought back fiercely, which made him run off. But the police caught him soon after. He had actually said he was out looking for kids to abuse. Can you believe that?
In 2010, he got a lifelong restriction order because of the danger he posed. He had just been released from a seven-year sentence for another sexual offense when he committed this crime. It’s like he never learned.
Yates told the police he lived in a fantasy world with no adults, just him and children. That’s just so messed up. He even agreed to be chemically castrated, but it didn’t change the fact that he was a serious threat.
The judge made it clear that Yates was a danger to the public, especially to women and kids. It’s a relief he was locked up, but it’s still tragic that he died in custody.
After his death, the Scottish Prison Service said they would hold a Fatal Accident Inquiry. They always do that when someone dies in custody. It’s a sad situation for everyone involved.
Yates had a history of taunting his victims even while in prison. He was banned from contacting one victim after he sent her letters bragging about his past abuse. It’s just sickening.
So, that’s the story. It’s a grim reminder of the dangers that exist out there, but thankfully, he’s no longer a threat.
