Sydney: Over the weekend, a crowd of hundreds gathered in Martin Place to protest against rising anti-Semitism in Australia. They were there to make it clear that enough is enough.
People were chanting and holding signs, urging Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to take a stronger stance against hate. The atmosphere was charged, and the crowd made their feelings known by booing the PM and Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
One of the speakers, Hagit Ashual from the Zionist Council of NSW, expressed the community’s frustration. She said they’ve been waiting for the government to act for over a year now.
She told the crowd, “We need you to take action,” emphasizing the urgent need for a zero-tolerance policy against anti-Semitism. The protest was peaceful, but the message was loud and clear.
This rally followed some disturbing incidents, including graffiti in Woollahra that read “kill Israel” and “death 2 Israel” near a burning car. Albanese called this behavior “abhorrent” and promised to work with police to address it.
Speakers at the rally also highlighted the recent firebombing of a synagogue in Melbourne, which has been labeled a terrorist attack. Albanese condemned this act, calling it a “crime of cowardice.”
Rabbi Benjamin Elton spoke about the need for safety in places of worship, stressing that everyone should be able to gather in peace, regardless of their faith.
As the crowd held signs like “Stop the hate mate,” it was clear that they were united in their demand for change. Reports of anti-Semitism have surged since the recent conflict in the Middle East, and many feel it’s time for the government to step up.
With tensions high, the protesters made it clear that they won’t back down until they see real action against hate in their communities.
