London: Big news in the rugby world! Maro Itoje has been named the new captain of England for the upcoming Six Nations. He’s stepping in for Jamie George, who’s been leading the team since the last World Cup.
Jamie George will still be around, though, as he’s taking on the vice-captain role alongside Ellis Genge. It’s a big change, and it’s the first time Itoje will hold the captaincy permanently, even though he’s filled in before.
Steve Borthwick has put together a 36-man squad for the tournament. Notably, Tom Willis from Saracens is included, but there’s no place for veteran prop Dan Cole or scrum-half Ben Spencer.
Borthwick praised Itoje, saying he’s been a key player for years and is known for his calm leadership style. He’s got a great relationship with the team and coaches, which should help him in this new role.
George, at 34, is still fighting for his spot in the next World Cup in 2027. He’s got some competition, but he’s been a solid captain, even if he’s been subbed off early in tight games.
Last year wasn’t the best for England, with only five wins out of 12 Tests. Itoje expressed his gratitude for the captaincy, calling it a huge honor for him and his family. He’s ready to take on the responsibility and give his all for the team and fans.
He also mentioned how great it is to have senior players around him for support. It’s all about building on what George has achieved as captain.
In other squad news, Willis is in, while Spencer is out to make way for Alex Mitchell’s return from injury. Dan Cole is also dropped, with new tighthead options coming in.
There are some fresh faces in the midfield too, with Oscar Beard and Fraser Dingwall stepping up alongside the usual starters. It’s shaping up to be an exciting Six Nations!
