Nottingham: A popular skatepark in Nottingham is closing down, and it’s a real bummer for the local skaters. Flo Skatepark, which has been a go-to spot for skaters for over a decade, is shutting its doors to make way for a new footbridge. This bridge will connect Trent Basin to the south bank of the river, near the Hook nature reserve.

This new crossing is a big deal, being the first one built over the river in more than 60 years. But sadly, Flo Skatepark will be demolished as part of the city council’s plans. Staff members are feeling the loss, calling it the “end of an era.” They’re already on the hunt for a new temporary space in Nottingham, hoping to find something by September.

Flo Skatepark was more than just a place to skate; it was a hub for the community, hosting events and music sessions that brought people together. The team is determined to keep the skateboarding spirit alive and is working on plans for a new facility that will include all the features skaters love, like a street area and a bowl.

They’re also looking into permanent locations, with talks happening for two potential long-term sites. The closure is tough, but the legacy of Flo Skatepark will continue. Nottingham City Council is on board, helping with the transition and encouraging anyone who can assist in finding a new home for Flo to reach out.

Funding for the new bridge is coming from the Department for Transport, with costs rising to at least £12 million due to inflation. Construction is set to kick off this spring, and the bridge is expected to open by the end of 2025. It’s a bittersweet moment for the skate community, but they’re hopeful for the future.
