Caithness: A Highland Council scheme is making progress in bringing empty homes back to life. The area has low demand for housing, so a choice-based letting system is in place. This allows applicants to express interest in available properties.

Councillor Glynis Campbell Sinclair shared that early results show the scheme is effective. The council’s void-plus policy focuses on improving vacant properties to make them more appealing for new tenants.

These improvements aim to help re-let homes within the local authority. Cllr Sinclair noted that the housing management team has done extensive work, including surveys and site engagement, to advance this project.

She mentioned that some previously empty homes have received offers after renovations. Feedback from new tenants has been positive, indicating satisfaction with their living conditions.

This project is part of a broader five-year plan by the council to drive social and economic change in the Highlands.
