Los Angeles: So, it turns out that during those crazy fires, some folks decided to take advantage of the chaos. Nine people have been charged with looting, and it’s pretty wild. One of the stolen items? An Emmy award! Can you believe it?
The district attorney, Nathan Hochmann, mentioned that four people were caught red-handed after snatching the Emmy from a home in Altadena. They didn’t even say whose Emmy it was. Talk about a bold move!
But that’s not all. Two other people are in hot water for breaking into homes in the same area. They could be looking at 12 years in prison if convicted. Yikes!
And during the mandatory evacuations, three more were caught looting in Mandeville Canyon. They allegedly made off with over $200,000 worth of stuff. That’s just low, right?
Hochmann didn’t hold back, saying these looters are just trying to exploit a terrible situation. He warned that they were expecting this kind of behavior and are ready to crack down on it.
There’s also a guy facing arson charges for starting a fire in Azusa. He could be looking at nine years behind bars. It’s just a mess out there.
Sheriff Robert Luna made it clear that they’re not playing around with looters. He said they’ll be increasing patrols in the affected areas and warned people to stay away from the curfew zones. If you’re thinking about looting, you’re gonna get caught.
There are even reports of people pretending to be firefighters to get into homes. That’s just insane!
On top of all this, Governor Gavin Newsom is in a bit of a spat with Elon Musk. Newsom accused Musk of encouraging looting after Musk shared some posts that twisted the narrative about looting laws. Newsom fired back, saying looting is illegal and that bad actors will face the music.
These fires have been devastating, destroying thousands of homes and claiming at least 24 lives, including a former child star. It’s a tough time for everyone, and the last thing people need is more chaos.
Officials are worried that the winds could spread ash and make things worse. It’s just a lot to deal with right now.
