Liverpool: Elon Musk’s recent comments about grooming gangs have stirred up quite a bit of controversy. A survivors’ group has slammed his remarks as a “reprehensible weaponisation” of the trauma that victims have faced.

Musk has been taking shots at Keir Starmer and his government after Labour turned down a request for a new inquiry into the issue. The Prime Minister responded, saying victims need action, not just more inquiries, and criticized those spreading misinformation.

He accused Starmer of failing to bring “rape gangs” to justice during his time leading the Crown Prosecution Service. But Starmer defended his record, highlighting his role in prosecuting significant child sexual abuse cases.

Gabrielle Shaw, the Chief Executive of the National Association of People Abused in Childhood, expressed her concern over Musk’s comments. She mentioned that they are retraumatizing for many victims, which is really heartbreaking.

Shaw pointed out that the way trauma is being used in discussions is just wrong. She noted that their helpline has been flooded with calls from upset victims reacting to Musk’s statements.

At a recent briefing, police revealed that gangs are linked to nearly two child sexual abuse offenses reported daily. The data showed a significant number of grooming crimes recorded in 2023, with a worrying trend continuing into 2024.

Assistant Chief Constable Rebecca Riggs emphasized that every statistic represents a person who has suffered a terrible crime. She warned that focusing on one ethnic group could make other victims feel their experiences are less valid.

Alexis Jay’s inquiry into child sexual abuse found a major failure in collecting accurate data on offenders and victims, which has led to uninformed debates about the issue. The greatest risk to children, she noted, often comes from within their own families.

Interestingly, UK officials are now keeping an eye on Musk’s social media posts, considering them a potential security risk.
