Elgin, Moray, St Giles Centre, Shopping, Closure

Elgin: This week, news about the St Giles Centre closing hit hard for folks in Elgin and Moray. It’s the biggest shopping spot in the area, and it’s set to shut down on January 20, 2025. All the businesses will need to clear out by then.

Centre manager Robin Nicholson was all smiles back in November 1991 when the place first opened. People are feeling pretty sad about the closure, and many have shared their best wishes for the employees and shops.

It’s also sparked a lot of memories for locals. Many remember the excitement when the centre opened in the early ’90s. We even dug up an old article from The Northern Scot that covered the grand opening.

Robin was featured showing off the shiny new interior, where all the businesses were getting ready to move in. Some of the first shops included John Menzies, Superdrug, and Benetton, along with a few others like Dorothy Perkins and Radio Rentals.

There were also local favorites like Smilies bakery and Christies the florists, who had their spots reserved. Delifrance was the original café in the mall, serving up treats to shoppers.

What about you? Do you have any memories of the St Giles Centre? We’d love to hear your stories on social media or through email!

It’s hard to imagine what Elgin will look like without the St Giles Centre. It’s been a big part of the community for so long.
