On December 13, 1968, Elgin Academy held its first assembly. This was a special day as the new building officially opened. The Northern Scot covered the event the next day.
The school was built for just under one million pounds. At the time, it was one of the most modern schools in the country. It was a big deal for the community.
The grand opening ceremony took place on March 25, 1969. Professor E. M. Wright from the University of Aberdeen officiated the event. It was a proud moment for everyone involved.
Located on the historic Morriston Farm site in Bishopmill, the academy featured a striking six-story tower block. It stood 100 feet tall and could accommodate 1,500 students.
Originally, the school was set to open in January. However, construction finished early, allowing the doors to open in mid-December. Peter Cameron (Builders) managed the project from Elgin.

Many staff members, both past and present, attended a commemorative lunch at the City Hotel in Elgin after the opening. It was a great way to celebrate the new beginning.
Cleaning the windows of the tower block was also part of the preparations. John Blackhall and J. O’Donnell were among those helping out.
