Manchester: So, there’s this wild story about a people smuggling gang that just got busted. It all started when a Vietnamese woman was found stuffed inside a car’s glove box. Can you believe that?
This happened back in June 2022 when Border Force officers discovered her hidden in a tight spot behind the dashboard. Talk about a crazy way to travel!
After that shocking find, authorities kicked off an investigation. They uncovered a whole smuggling network, which led to the seizure of fake documents, over 20,000 illegal cigarettes, and a stash of cash. Quite the haul!
Three main guys from the gang went through a 10-week trial, insisting they didn’t do anything wrong. But the court didn’t buy it. They were found guilty of helping people sneak into the UK.
Redar Curtis, Jozef Kadet, and Khales Akram Jabar were all convicted. The court heard they were part of a group that helped people get into the UK illegally, using all sorts of shady methods.
Five other members of the gang, including two brothers, also pleaded guilty to various charges. They were all in on the scheme, which involved creating fake IDs and other illegal activities.
The whole thing kicked off when a driver returning from France was caught with the woman hidden in his car. He ended up getting a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence.
And it didn’t stop there. Curtis’ wife was also caught trying to smuggle another woman in her vehicle. This led to a bigger investigation that linked them all together.
Now, all eight of them are set to face the music in court again on January 29, where they’ll find out their sentences. It’s a real eye-opener about how dangerous these smuggling operations can be.
Officials are making it clear that these gangs don’t care about the people they exploit. They’re just in it for the money, putting lives at risk in the process. It’s a serious issue that needs to be tackled.
