Edinburgh: So, it turns out Cammy Day, the former Labour council leader, has been in hot water for a while now. He just resigned last month after some pretty serious allegations came to light. Apparently, he sent explicit messages to Ukrainian refugees, and now Police Scotland is looking into it.
But here’s the kicker: The Herald found out that there were five complaints against him from 2018 to the end of 2023. The first complaint was lodged back on May 16, 2018, when he was the deputy leader in a coalition with the SNP and Labour.
Kevin Lang, the leader of the council’s Lib Dem group, spoke to The Herald about the situation. He emphasized how crucial it is to have a thorough independent review. He mentioned that it’s important to figure out what was known and when, plus how the council handled the information.
Lang also said they’re working on finding the right person to conduct this review, and they hope to make a formal appointment next month. Sounds like they’re taking this seriously.
After stepping down, Day put out a statement but didn’t really address the allegations directly or apologize. He mentioned that all the chatter about his personal life is distracting from the council’s work for the people of Edinburgh. He feels it undermines the efforts of his colleagues and council staff.
Day added that he hasn’t been contacted by the police yet but is ready to cooperate fully with their investigation. It’s a pretty messy situation, and it’ll be interesting to see how it unfolds.
