Goole: So, there’s this guy in East Yorkshire who got hit with a hefty bill after leaving his car parked on the street for ages. Antony Smith, from Kingsway, was fined over £1,600 for abandoning his gold Aixam car.

The whole thing went down at Beverley Magistrates’ Court. Smith didn’t even show up, so they ruled against him in his absence. He ended up with a £660 fine, plus costs and a victim surcharge.

The council had to step in and remove the car, which they later destroyed since Smith didn’t claim it. Apparently, the car had been reported abandoned back in March 2024, and the council tried reaching out to him multiple times.

They even offered him a chance to pay a £200 fixed penalty, but he ignored that too. By the time the council took action, the car’s tax and MOT had expired, and it was in pretty rough shape.

Carl Skelton from the council mentioned that leaving a car abandoned can really annoy residents and pose safety risks. They usually try to contact owners first, but sometimes they have to take matters into their own hands.

It’s a reminder that if you leave your vehicle unattended for too long, you might end up with a fine. If you see an abandoned car, you can report it to the council for them to check it out.
