East Lancashire: Residents are being reminded to get their flu shots if they qualify, as hospital admissions are climbing due to the virus.
In the North-West, more folks are ending up in hospitals with serious flu symptoms, and the virus is spreading in the community.
The NHS is urging everyone eligible to book their flu vaccinations soon to protect themselves and their loved ones.
Recent data shows that around 3,800 people were hospitalized in the North-West with flu during the last week of December.
Dr. Linda Charles-Ozuzu, who oversees the NHS vaccination program, emphasized that flu is circulating widely in the area.
She mentioned that getting the flu vaccine is the best way to avoid severe illness and reduce symptoms if you do catch it.
Dr. Charles-Ozuzu encourages everyone eligible to get vaccinated as soon as they can.
It’s crucial to protect yourself and those around you, especially vulnerable friends and family.
Flu can be serious, and it can lead to severe consequences for those at risk.
She advised speaking to your GP or pharmacist about getting the flu shot.
Remember, the last day to get your flu vaccination is March 31.
If you’re eligible for a free flu shot, it includes:
- People aged 50 and over;
- Those aged six months to 49 years with specific health conditions;
- Pregnant women;
- Children aged two and three as of August 31, 2022;
- Primary and secondary school kids in years seven, eight, and nine;
- People in care homes and their carers;
- Household contacts of those with weakened immune systems;
- Frontline health and social care workers.
Also, if you’re eligible for the flu vaccine, you might qualify for the COVID-19 vaccine too.
If you don’t fit into these categories, you can still pay for a flu shot at your local pharmacy.
