Colne: An award-winning band called English Teacher, fronted by local singer Lily Fontaine, has just snagged a spot in the top five of BBC Radio 1’s Sounds of 2025 list. How cool is that?
They came in fifth place, and it’s a big deal! The band formed at Leeds Conservatoire, and their guitarist, Lewis Whiting, is a former student from St Bede’s High School.
This recognition comes after they won the 2024 Mercury Prize for their debut album, ‘This Could Be Texas.’ Talk about a fantastic achievement!
Other artists on the list include Ezra Collective and Barry Can’t Swim, but the top spot went to American pop star Chappell Roan. It’s a competitive lineup!
English Teacher has been on a roll lately, also getting shortlisted for BBC Radio 6’s Album of the Year. They’re really making waves!
After winning the Mercury Prize, Lily took a moment to thank her mom for her support, especially for the album artwork. It’s a lovely touch, right?
They were the first band outside London to win the Mercury Prize in ten years, and the judges praised their unique style and character. That’s impressive!
Lily mentioned how the album cover features the Cow and Calf Rocks in Ilkley, painted by her mom back in the ’80s. It’s beautiful and holds a special meaning for her.
Chappell Roan picked up the award from DJ Jack Saunders, and it was a surreal moment for everyone involved. Lily reflected on how the album’s themes really came together in the end.
The judges described their album as a fresh take on the traditional guitar band format, blending surrealism with social commentary. Sounds like a must-listen!
Looking ahead, the band has a gig in Japan soon and will perform at Belgrave Music Hall in Leeds on January 27. They’ve got a busy year ahead!
They’ll also be supporting Irish rockers Fontaines D.C. at Wythenshawe Park in Manchester on August 15, alongside Belfast rappers Kneecap. It’s going to be an exciting show!
