Dynamic Weather Bomb Set to Hit Newfoundland with Severe Conditions

Newfoundland: This weekend, the East Coast is gearing up for a wild weather ride. A strong low-pressure system is on its way, and it’s expected to meet the criteria for a weather bomb. That means we’re in for some serious wind, heavy snow, and rain, plus a chance of coastal flooding.
Newfoundland is bracing for the worst of it. The island is under winter storm warnings, wind alerts, and even special weather statements. It’s going to be a messy few days, so folks need to be prepared.
Residents are being urged to take precautions. Secure any loose items outside, keep your devices charged, and try to avoid traveling unless it’s absolutely necessary. The winds are going to be the biggest issue, so power outages are likely.
As for the storm’s timing, it’ll spend most of Saturday out at sea but will start to ramp up as it gets closer to Newfoundland. By Saturday night, strong easterly winds will kick in, and heavy snow will start falling overnight into Sunday.
For the Avalon Peninsula, snow will eventually turn to rain, which means lower snow totals there. But central and western Newfoundland will see snow all day, with heavy amounts expected. P.E.I. and northern Nova Scotia will also get in on the action.
Temperatures might warm up a bit, leading to some mixing and rain in central Newfoundland. But higher elevations will stay snowy, and that snow could linger into Monday.
We’re looking at a widespread 5-20 cm of snow, with some areas possibly getting 20-40 cm. The combination of heavy snow and strong winds could create blizzard-like conditions, so drivers should really think twice about hitting the road.
Speaking of winds, gusts are expected to reach between 80-100 km/h, peaking on Sunday morning. Some coastal areas might even see gusts up to 115 km/h. That’s no joke, and it could lead to power outages.
With those strong winds, we’re also expecting high waves and rough surf along the eastern and northern shores. Environment and Climate Change Canada has warned that these waves could cause coastal erosion and damage to infrastructure, especially in areas that have seen issues before.
