Northumberland: The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) just announced some good news! They’ve rolled out Cold Weather Payments for folks in 47 new postcode areas. This means eligible households can snag a £25 payment to help with heating costs during this chilly weather.
About 160,000 households across Northumberland, County Durham, Staffordshire, Derbyshire, and Wales are set to benefit from this update. The announcement came on January 10, 2025, and there’s even an interactive map to check if your area is included.
In Wales alone, 10 postcode areas are now eligible, covering around 5,000 households. Some of these areas include Llangollen and Corwen. It’s a real boost for those who need it most.
In Northumberland and County Durham, 19 postcode areas are eligible, which means about 141,000 households can expect some extra help. Areas like Durham and Stanley are on the list, so it’s worth checking if you’re in one of them.
Staffordshire and Derbyshire also got in on the action, with 14 postcode areas eligible for payments. This includes places like Biddulph and Matlock Bath, helping around 11,000 households stay warm.
And let’s not forget about the four postcode areas in Northumberland that are also getting support. Payments were triggered on January 10, so it’s a great time to see if you’re eligible.
Just last week, payments were activated for 51 postcode areas in Yorkshire, bringing the total to over 250,000 households receiving Cold Weather Payments this winter. You can easily check your postcode on the interactive map provided.
Previously, two payments totaling £50 were made to about 10,000 households in Cumbria and Northumberland. Northern Ireland has a similar scheme, but it’s run separately from the DWP.
Cold Weather Payments are available for people in England and Wales who receive certain benefits. In Scotland, they have a different system that provides support every winter, regardless of the weather.
There are around 3.9 million people eligible for these payments under the DWP scheme, with 1.2 million receiving Pension Credit. Last year, the DWP made 364,000 payments across England and Wales, costing about £9.1 million.
If you’re receiving benefits like Pension Credit, Income Support, or Universal Credit, you might be eligible for the Cold Weather Payment. But keep in mind, not everyone will automatically get it, as there are specific criteria to meet.
