Melbourne: Peter Dutton, the federal opposition leader, is gearing up for his first big election rally of the year. He’s planning to call on “quietly patriotic” Australians to vote Labor out of power. This speech is a nod to the campaign style of his predecessor.
He’ll kick off his campaign in the Chisholm electorate, a seat the Liberals lost back in 2022. Dutton will be joined by Nationals leader David Littleproud and deputy Liberal leader Sussan Ley. The event will be introduced by Dr. Katie Allen, a former MP looking to reclaim her spot in parliament.
In his speech, Dutton is expected to emphasize that Australians can’t afford another three years of Labor. He’ll point to the last three years as a warning of what’s to come if Labor stays in power.
He’ll also lay out his government’s priorities, focusing on issues like the cost of living, the housing crisis, and migration. Dutton believes only he can turn things around for Australia and is appealing to voters who are “compassionate, stoic, fair, and quietly patriotic.”
This approach is similar to what former Prime Minister Scott Morrison did back in 2019, when he talked about the “Quiet Australians.” Dutton is also critical of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, calling him one of the “weakest ever” leaders and saying that Australians are worse off under his government.
He hopes that voters will see the Coalition as the best option to get the country back on track. It’s shaping up to be an interesting election season!
