Durham: Rookhope Primary School has been sitting empty since it closed in August 2024. Now, it’s set to be turned into four small business units and a community hub. Sounds like a great way to breathe new life into the place!

The plan keeps the building’s original stone and steel rail fencing, which is nice because it helps maintain its historic charm. It’s always good to see old buildings being respected while being put to new use.

On January 13, Durham County Council gave the green light for this project, but there are a few conditions. For instance, they’ll limit operational hours from 9 am to 6 pm, and they want to use reclaimed stone for the new gate pillars. Plus, they’re taking steps to protect local wildlife, like bats.

They’re also increasing parking spaces from six to 26, which should help with accessibility. A new vehicle gate will be built using reclaimed stone, sticking to the planning guidelines.

This development aligns with local and national goals to reuse vacant sites and boost rural economies. It’s a smart move to ensure the building, which has historical significance, is used in a way that benefits the community.

Traffic studies show that the new access will meet safety standards, and they expect low vehicle volumes. Even though a small part of the stone wall will be removed for access, it won’t hurt the village’s overall look.

A bat survey showed no major issues, as long as they follow the ecological guidelines. The new setup will include four craft or workshop units, with sizes ranging from 376 to 807 square feet.

They’ll also create a new vehicular gate with reclaimed stone and mark out a rear hard-play area with 20 parking spaces, including one for electric vehicles. This project could create jobs for up to 20 people once it’s fully up and running.

Rookhope Primary School closed due to falling student numbers, financial issues, and high maintenance costs. It’s nice to see it getting a second chance!
