Drunk Man Strangles Woman After She Rejected His Advances

Warrington: So, there was this pretty shocking incident involving a guy named Martin Dempsey. He showed up in court after a night out that went way too far.
It all started last June when Dempsey was out drinking with friends. He kept making unwanted advances toward a 34-year-old woman, who just wasn’t having it. She turned him down repeatedly.
Things took a turn when they ended up alone for about half an hour. They were seen on CCTV playfully chatting, but then Dempsey got aggressive. He told her some pretty crude stuff, and when she rejected him again, he started hurling insults.
Then, out of nowhere, he grabbed her by the throat and pushed her against a wall. Thankfully, it didn’t leave any physical marks, but it was terrifying for her.
A bystander saw what was happening and helped the woman get to safety. Dempsey was found nearby, surrounded by empty bottles, and claimed he couldn’t remember much, just that they were “playfighting.”
In court, the woman said she felt so scared that she moved away from Warrington because Dempsey is a known figure there. His defense tried to argue that both were drunk and that she had also touched him inappropriately, but the judge wasn’t buying it.
Judge Potter made it clear that Dempsey had crossed a line. He pointed out that the woman had clearly said no multiple times before Dempsey escalated things. The judge also highlighted how serious strangulation can be, even if there are no visible injuries.
In the end, Dempsey got 16 months in prison and has to register as a sex offender for the next decade. Plus, there’s a restraining order in place to keep him away from the victim for five years. Let’s hope he gets the help he needs.
