Melbourne, Australia, Katherine Antonia Osborne, Gulet Mohammed Ahmed, Culpable Driving
Melbourne: A tragic incident unfolded when a driver, high and drunk, sped through red lights and took the life of a 16-year-old girl. Gulet Mohammed Ahmed, 40, was sentenced to 14 years and nine months in prison for his reckless actions.
In court, Judge Anne Hassan expressed how Ahmed’s behavior extinguished the bright future of Katherine Antonia Osborne. She emphasized that he was a danger to everyone on the road.
On March 11, 2023, Ahmed was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he got behind the wheel. He was seen driving dangerously through Flemington, with witnesses reporting his erratic behavior.
Before the crash, he ran a red light and collided with another vehicle, then reversed and sped off. He ignored two more red lights before crashing into the Osborne family’s car, which had Katherine in the back seat.
The impact pushed their car into a pole, injuring two pedestrians as well. Ahmed’s chaos didn’t stop there; he became aggressive after the crash, yelling at bystanders and assaulting someone trying to help.
When police arrived, he was uncooperative and refused a breath test. He later pleaded guilty to several charges, including culpable driving causing death. Judge Hassan pointed out that he could have stopped after the first crash, potentially avoiding the tragedy.
She sentenced him to a minimum of 10 years and nine months, with the possibility of parole in just over eight years. As the sentence was read, Ahmed looked down, surrounded by the grieving family of his victim.
