Farnham: Big changes are coming to this charming town. Starting in mid-January 2025, a year-long project will kick off to revamp the town center. Expect road closures and diversions as they work to make travel easier.

Even though Farnham is known as the prettiest town in the UK, the roads have been a bit outdated and congested. The folks at Surrey County Council want to make it safer and more enjoyable for everyone to walk, bike, or take the bus around town.

The plans are based on feedback from a public consultation held in 2023. They aim to improve public spaces and lessen the impact of traffic.

Over several phases, they’ll be doing a lot of work. This includes resurfacing roads and pavements, widening walkways, and making it easier for drivers to navigate. They’ll also add controlled crossings to help people cross the streets safely.

The first phase will focus on Riverside and Borelli Walk. Work is set to start in January and will last about 11 weeks. During this time, some footpaths will be closed, but there will be diversions for pedestrians.

Next up, they’ll tackle Castle Street and West Street to allow for right turns and two-way traffic. This will help keep things moving while the work is ongoing. Expect some temporary traffic lights and overnight closures.

Then, they’ll work on Downing Street to make it two-way, allowing easier access to the Waggon Yard car park. This phase is expected to start in March 2025 and will last about eight weeks.

After that, they’ll create a new junction layout at Longbridge, Union Road, and Victoria Road. This phase will start in late May and will also last for eight weeks, mostly during the day.

There are more phases planned for summer and autumn 2025, focusing on pedestrian crossings and resurfacing roads. They’re trying to minimize disruption, especially around schools.

As the work continues, there will be changes to bus services, and updates will be shared regularly. The council is committed to reviewing the plans as they go along, so stay tuned for more info!
