Birmingham: It turns out that a whopping three-quarters of drivers don’t really know what some important buttons in their cars do. This is especially concerning as winter rolls in, and these features could help prevent accidents and fines.
According to research from Auto Trader, it seems like no matter how long someone has been driving, they still struggle with all those symbols on the dashboard. Erin Baker from Auto Trader mentioned that figuring out the center console can be tricky since different brands use different symbols.
Shockingly, about 36 million drivers in the UK think the air conditioning button is for de-icing when it gets cold. Plus, over 40% of folks didn’t even recognize the window lock button when shown a picture of it.
Young drivers, especially those aged 17 to 24, are really confused about the recirculating air button. Half of them admitted they have no clue what it does. The survey also found that the MEM button is the most misunderstood, with 77% of people not knowing its purpose.
This memory button can do a few things, like save a radio station or set a seat position, but it’s not in every car. Then there’s the SYNC button, which can either sync the passenger’s temperature settings with the driver’s or help with hands-free calls. A staggering 73% of drivers don’t get what it’s for either.
As for the snowflake symbol, it’s supposed to turn on the cool air conditioning. While 72% of people say they understand it, only 28% actually got it right. The rest thought it was about cold weather warnings or icy roads.
